Pinterest Gets More Sharable

We are a mobile society. It is getting to the point where people are starting to use their phones more than their desktops. Why? because the phone is computer we keep with us all the time. As processor speed increases we are about to hit parity with the desktop computers.

Pinterest sees this as well and has just opened up their API (Application Program Interface) to developers. What does this mean? Now apps can tie directly into Pinterest. The new API access will allow the following:

  • Give them a personalized, curated experience based on their boards and Pins
  • Let them easily create multiple Pins or boards to get more of your content distributed across Pinterest
  • Help make Pins come to life (like with an app that uses recipe Pins to order ingredients from a store)

The last is to me super exciting. Last year they released rich pins that would allow you to show a recipe in the all the ingredients. Now you can tie the ingredients to a store. I see this working great for the craft industry. They have projects that are very similar to a recipe. You can order all the supplies from one place. Whereas for food, unless its something very hard to get, I see more people going to Whole Foods or Sprouts.

Pinterest is smart to open up the API to developers. They see apps aren’t going any where. To get people to pin on the go they have to let developers put in Pinterest features in those apps. On desktop you can pin just about anything from any site. As long as pinning is available. It can be done through the Pinterest button or pasting the link in the Pinterest site.

One of the most exciting partners testing this out is IFTTT (If This Then That). IFTTT is an app that will automate many things between apps. It will let you post your Instagram pics to Twitter or Flickr. Its amazing what they can do, see their site and all the recipes. Their app is to make life easier! I would explain this but the Pinterest for Business  blog does a better job.

IFTTT helps you get the most out of your connected life, and now with Pinterest APIs you can seamlessly save Instagram photos, Reddit upvotes, Etsy favorites and more as Pins. The number of people who are Pinning with IFTTT is increasing 14% each weekand the number of Pins being added from IFTTT has grown 33% week over week. – Pinterest for Business

This will allow you to expand your brands Pinterest Activity over your App. Even if you don’t have an app, with IFTTT you can share other areas of your marketing with Pinterest. It will be interesting to see what developers do with this API. Find out more at the Pinterest for Business blog.
