I was on Facebook and saw Evan LaPointe said “Social media isn’t feeling very social lately. Anyone actually want to talk to someone, or are we just having a link sharing spree?” If you follow me on Twitter you saw me mention this a few weeks back. Why is it that most social people just post links?
I don’t have a big issue with sharing a link and then have people talk on it or something similar, but how many people out there just post links and that’s it. Sometimes I post a question or comment about the link to see if they are actually listening. It’s been hit or miss with responses. But I think if we share a link we need to be ready to talk about it and share opinions.
I was on a webinar today that Cision did, it was all about finding influencers in social media. It went into how you judge someone by the number of followers. I have always been a believer that you can’t judge someone by the number of followers it’s the quality. Richard Scoble is another that believes in this. He would rather followers he can interact with, rather then have millions of ones that have no interest in what you have to say.
I think as social media professionals we need to be social. We need to post a link then ask questions about it, see what kind of reaction we got. I think we get so caught up in clients, doing work that we post links to go up through out the day. I know I am guilty of that as well.
I don’t want this to be a total bitchfest about social, but I have met some great people in marketing and social. A lot local here in Atlanta and the world over. Twitter can be a great tool for meeting and talking to other like minded.
But we need to practice what we preach with social and share ideas with each other. Social changes fast and we all need to share info when we can, that’s just my two cents!
