When you think of cutting edge social media campaigns. You think of Oreos, Coca-Cola and more. You don’t think of a Fast Food restaurant. Most quick service restaurants are focused on getting customers. This is done by running ads and timing posts for just the right time. Rarely does this step outside the food arena. The one exception was Josh Martin at Arby’s Tweeting at Ferrell to give them their hat back.
I have been a huge fan of Whataburger since I had it at Dallas Love Field in August of 2014. It has become one of my favorites and I regularly drive to Birmingham, Alabama (which is a 2 hour drive) to get a burger. I don’t go just for a burger and come home but plan a day around it. After that first time I started to research the company. I love their food and what they do in the world of marketing.
They are on point for social trends. I have posted before about them getting in while a previous meme was hot. Now they have done it with Pokemon GO!. If you haven’t been around to know about Pokemon GO!, It’s a game taking the US by storm. It’s a virtual game where you go around catching Pokemons with your phone. It has gone so mainstream that I saw it on NBC Nightly News this week. Whataburger saw this and created this post on Facebook and social media.
It’s not in “real time.” But it’s pretty darn close. Pokemon GO was released a few days ago and this was posted July 10th. Which is a Sunday! I must tip my hat to them. They are always taking risks and posting parodies of memes and internet trends for the brand. All I want to know is where do I sign up to be part of this team.
